Classification of automobile half shafts

Classification of automobile half shafts

The axle shafts commonly used in modern automobiles are divided into two types: full floating and semi-floating according to their different support types. (It is also divided into three types, namely full floating, 3/4 floating, and semi-floating)

Fully floating half shaft

A half shaft that only bears torque during operation and does not bear any force or bending moment at both ends is called a fully floating half shaft. The outer end flange of the axle shaft is fastened to the wheel hub with bolts, and the hub is mounted on the axle shaft sleeve through two far apart bearings.

Structurally, the inner end of the fully floating half-shaft is splined, and the outer end is provided with a flange, with several holes on the flange. Because of its reliable operation, it is widely used in commercial vehicles.

3/4 floating half shaft

In addition to bearing all the torque, it also needs to bear a part of the bending moment. The most prominent structural feature of the 3/4 floating half shaft is that there is only one bearing at the outer end of the half shaft, and the bearing supports the wheel hub.

Due to the poor support stiffness of one bearing, this half shaft not only bears torque, but also bears the bending moment caused by the vertical force, driving force and lateral force between the wheel and the road surface. 3/4 floating half shafts are rarely used in automobiles.

semi-floating half shaft

The semi-floating half-shaft is directly supported on the bearing located in the inner hole of the outer end of the axle housing with a journal near the outer end. The end of the half-shaft is fixedly connected to the hub with a journal with a tapered surface and a key, or is directly connected to the hub with a flange. The wheel disc and brake hub are connected. Therefore, in addition to transmitting torque, it also has to withstand the bending moments caused by vertical forces, driving forces and lateral forces from the wheels.

Semi-floating half shafts are used in passenger cars and some commercial vehicles due to their simple structure, small mass and low cost.
